The Cuban opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer shared on social media a snippet of an old speech by Donald Trump about Cuba, delivered 26 years ago, in which the current President of the United States warned about the risks of negotiating with Fidel Castro's regime.
Ferrer posted the video on the social network X along with a comment in which he stated: “This is what Donald Trump said 26 years ago. His words are very relevant today. Doing business with tyranny today leads to bigger problems tomorrow. China is the best example, and the size of the country doesn’t matter.”
In the speech, Trump criticized the possibility of rewarding the Cuban regime with trade or international legitimacy.
"But we should not reward Fidel Castro with trade, currency, or respect," the businessman stated at the time.
The current U.S. president also warned about the consequences of negotiating with a dictatorship.
"If we negotiate today with the tyranny, we will face greater problems tomorrow," he pointed out in the video.
Trump also described the political situation on the island by stating that "Castro's prisons are full of dissenters, its cemeteries full of patriots, and its government full of thugs."
The Cuban opposition member spread the material amidst the debate generated by recent reports about possible conversations between Washington and Havana, a topic that has provoked reactions both inside and outside the island.
Ferrer, founder of the Cuban Patriotic Union (UNPACU), has been one of the most consistent critics of the Cuban regime and has reiterated on numerous occasions his rejection of any negotiations that do not involve political changes and respect for human rights in the country.
