A group of young people was detained in Old Havana after being accused of intimidating and threatening passersby in San Juan de Dios Park, in the Cathedral neighborhood, in Havana.

According to a post on Facebook by Osvaldo De Jesús Figueroa Pérez, an official-aligned profile, the arrest took place in the early hours of this Monday following complaints from neighbors, and it was carried out by the National Revolutionary Police (PNR).

During the operation, the agents reportedly seized several knives and blunt objects that, according to authorities, were in the possession of those arrested at the time of their apprehension.

The message circulated on social media emphasizes that “no act of violence or social disorder will be comprehensible or acceptable,” and warns that those who disrupt public order will face the full weight of the law.

Insecurity and official discourse

Although the report presents police action as an effective response, it also reflects a growing concern about insecurity in urban areas of the capital, a phenomenon that has become increasingly visible in Cuba in recent years.

Despite the official rhetoric that insists on maintaining public order, citizens are increasingly reporting thefts, assaults, and acts of violence, in a context marked by economic crisis, scarcity, and the deterioration of living conditions.

This type of statement also tends to emphasize the quick response of the authorities but fails to provide details about the detainees, possible social causes of the phenomenon, or statistics that could help gauge the scope of the problem.

Meanwhile, the perception of insecurity continues to grow among the population, especially in central and tourist areas such as Old Havana.
