The Havana municipality of Playa is becoming one of the active centers of protests in the Cuban capital amid the energy crisis the country is facing, with repeated banging of pots and pans in various neighborhoods over the past few days.
A new incident was recently reported in Buenavista, near 64th Street, according to a video shared by independent journalist José Raúl Gallego. The images, recorded in complete darkness due to the blackout, do not reveal what is happening in the surroundings, but the sound of pots being banged confirms that protests continue in the area.
“They sent me this video from Havana. A pot-banging protest in Buenavista, Playa, near 64th Street,” Gallego wrote while sharing the material on social media.
This report reinforces a pattern that has been observed since early March, when nighttime protests began to multiply in Havana following the collapse of the Antonio Guiteras power plant. Since then, Playa has transitioned from being a secondary point to becoming part of the visible map of citizen discontent.
One of the clearest precedents occurred on March 10 in Jaimanitas, also in Playa, where a pot-banging protest against the blackouts led to the arrest of independent journalist Yunia Figueredo, who was later released. This incident marked a turning point in the visibility of the municipality within the wave of protests.
Another significant event within the municipality took place on March 9 in Miramar, where a pot banging protest was also reported during a power outage, as part of several consecutive nights of protests in Havana.
Since then, reports of pot-banging protests in different areas of Playa suggest an internal expansion of these demonstrations, which are no longer confined to a single neighborhood.
The repeated protests in this municipality reflect the ongoing impact of power outages, as well as the growing discontent over food shortages and the lack of effective responses from the regime.
In the context of ongoing protests in Havana and other provinces, Playa joins the areas where discontent is persistently expressed, even in complete darkness, as evidenced by the video circulated in recent hours.
