The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, described Cuba as "a disaster" and directly blamed the communist government for the deep crisis the island is facing.
During an interview with Fox News, Rubio responded to a question about recent statements made by President Donald Trump regarding the situation in Cuba and was blunt in his assessment of the country.
"Cuba is a disaster, and it is due to its communist government; it doesn’t work. This has been going on for 67 years. It’s a disaster. It’s worse than ever," he stated.
The head of U.S. diplomacy avoided providing details on possible future actions, but emphasized that the current situation is the result of decades of failed policies under the regime.
The statements come in the context of increasing pressure from Washington on Havana, amidst an economic and social crisis that has worsened in recent years, characterized by shortages, blackouts, and a decline in living conditions.
Rubio has been one of the most critical voices of the Cuban regime within the U.S. administration, insisting that the island's political system is primarily responsible for the internal collapse.
Rubio recently launched new criticisms from the Oval Office against the Cuban regime and asserted that the economic reforms implemented on the island are not enough to resolve the deep economic crisis.
In his statements, Rubio asserted that the main problem of Cuba is structural and lies in a system that, in his view, has proven to be unviable for decades.
From the same location, the Secretary of State also stated that Cuba needs a radical change of leadership to emerge from its crisis.
