The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated this Friday that Cuba is facing the worst crisis in its recent history, referring to the economic and social deterioration experienced by the island.
During an interview with Fox News, the official was asked about the situation in the country and noted that the current scenario is unprecedented in recent decades.
"It is the worst situation they have ever faced," Rubio stated, attributing the crisis directly to the current political system in Cuba.
The head of U.S. diplomacy insisted that the collapse the island is experiencing is the result of years of governance under the communist regime, which he blames for the lack of freedoms, economic decline, and the precarious living conditions.
The statements come in a context marked by prolonged power outages, food shortages, an energy crisis, and growing social discontent within the country.
Rubio has reiterated on several occasions his critical stance towards the Cuban government, pointing out that the crisis is not due to external factors, but rather to structural failures within the system itself.
In that same vein, the official referred to Cuba again as “a disaster” and held the regime accountable for the current situation, stating that the country “does not function” after more than six decades under the same political model.
His statements are part of Washington's strategy to increase pressure on Havana, at a time when the internal crisis on the island is deepening and creating greater uncertainty about its future.
