A Brazilian activist described Cuba as "an example of sovereignty and dignity since 1959" during an official event in Havana, as part of the
According to a report from the official news channel, the statement occurred during the arrival of the “Granma 2” ship, which transported about 30 tons of food, medicines, and other supplies from Mexico.
The activist Thiago de Ávila e Silva Oliveira thanked the governments of Cuba and Mexico for their logistical support and highlighted the welcome he received on the island. "Since 1959, Cuba has remained an example of sovereignty and dignity," he stated during his speech.
He also praised the international role of the Cuban government, noting that the country has sent medical brigades to various parts of the world, including Africa during the Ebola crisis and European cities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event was attended by authorities from the Communist Party and the Government in Havana, who welcomed the crew members of the solidarity convoy at the cruise terminal of the capital's port.
The ship, which set sail from the Mexican port of Progreso in Yucatán, experienced delays due to electrical failures during the journey, but ultimately managed to arrive at the island with the cargo destined for public institutions.
Among the recipients of the aid are health centers in the capital, such as the William Soler Pediatric Cardiocenter, according to the official report.
The activist's statements come amidst a deep crisis in Cuba, characterized by prolonged blackouts, shortages of food and medicine, and a general decline in the living conditions of the population.
