A fourth shipment of humanitarian aid sent by the Mexican government arrived in Cuba this Friday, carrying over 96 tons of food, amidst a widespread crisis that severely impacts the population.

The shipment was transported by the Logistics Support Vessel Huasteco of the Mexican Navy, which departed from the port of Veracruz with supplies, mainly beans and rice, as reported by the Secretariat of the Navy in an official statement.

With this delivery, the total volume of humanitarian aid sent by Mexico to the island amounts to 3,125 tons, with participation from local governments (Cdmx and Puebla) and social organizations.

The initiative responds to a directive from President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has faced criticism from those who believe that rather than assisting the population of the Island, these supports merely bolster the ruling regime.

Mexico has established itself as one of the main external allies of the regime, which has resulted in threats and pressures from the U.S. government, leading to the suspension of Mexican oil supplies to the Island.

On the other hand, the arrival of these shipments has been accompanied by controversies regarding their distribution. Journalistic reports and social media complaints have indicated that donated resources may be diverted for sale in government dollar stores, which are inaccessible to most of the population.

However, Cuban authorities, from Díaz-Canel himself to officials from the Ministries of Domestic Trade (Mincin) and Foreign Trade (Mincex), have consistently denied these allegations.

More than donations, some analysts have pointed out, the Cuban people need to change the system that has brought them to their current dire state, but Díaz-Canel focuses his discourse on publicly and emphatically thanking the support received from his Mexican counterpart.
