Cubans on the price of gasoline in the U.S.: "We are just a penny away from fulfilling the plan."

The Cuban comedian Javier Berridy published a video on Facebook where he jokes about the price of gasoline in the United States, and the comments from his followers sparked a debate among exiled Cubans about inflation, the Biden era, and Trump's unfulfilled promise.

In the 26-second clip recorded at a gas station, Berridy notes that the price reads $3.99 per gallon and celebrates sarcastically.

"We just need one more cent to reach four, come on, we can do it, we’re just a cent away from fulfilling the plan," referring directly to the planning jargon of the Cuban regime.

At the end of the video, the comedian reveals the hit to the wallet: almost 100 dollars for gasoline, how nice.

The video arrives at a time when fuel prices in the U.S. have risen sharply during March 2026, driven by the military conflict with Iran, which pushed the price of Brent crude oil above $102.

According to the organization AAA, the national average reached $3.95 per gallon on the 23rd of this month, the highest level since 2023.

In Florida, where the largest Cuban community in the country resides, the price reached $3.93 per gallon, with areas like West Palm Beach-Boca Raton exceeding $4.07.

The contrast with just a month earlier is striking: at the end of February, a gallon in Florida cost $2.86, which represents an increase of over a dollar in a few weeks.

In the comments on Berridy's video, several followers complained about the high price and recalled that during the Biden administration, gasoline was cheaper: the national average in November 2024 was $3.07 per gallon.

Others pointed out that the current rise frustrates Trump's central promise to lower the price to less than $2 per gallon, which had made real progress in January 2026, when the gallon dropped to $2.90, the lowest level in four years and the White House celebrated it with a viral video.

However, another part of the comments responded with irony, putting the complaint in perspective: in Cuba, the price of a liter of gasoline in the informal market reached up to $10 in March 2026, while the average monthly salary on the island is only $10 or $15.

A Cuban identified as @ravelo.viral summarized it on TikTok with a comparison that also went viral: "Hey you, stressed out complaining in the United States because gasoline is three dollars a gallon… come here, because it’s ten dollars a liter. Just imagine that the salary is like ten dollars… your salary goes for one liter."

Berridy, a member of the comedy group Punto y Coma alongside José Coll and Jardiel González, is one of the most followed Cuban comedians on social media, with a style that blends social critique with references to everyday life both in Cuba and in exile.
