The Cuban activist Madelyn Sardiñas Padrón published a fiery text on social media challenging the regime to call for a free referendum on a change of government, in direct response to the recent statements by President Miguel Díaz-Canel.

The catalyst was an interview that Díaz-Canel granted last Thursday to the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, in which he stated that his continuation in office depends on the people and the representatives of that people in the National Assembly of People's Power, not on the United States.

In a meeting with the former Spanish leader of Podemos Pablo Iglesias, the president also stated that the people do not want him and that the Communist Party will continue to be "the guiding force of society" as a "guarantee of independence and sovereignty".

Sardiñas Padrón dismantled that statement with a direct question: "If you are so sure that the Cuban people do not want a change of regime, why don’t you eliminate the requirement for permanent residency in the national territory to exercise active voting and ask them at the polls?"

The Cuban woman recalled that the last public consultation was the Constitutional Referendum on February 24, 2019, where she herself voted "Yes", and that subsequently the government also .

According to Martí Noticias, Sardiñas Padrón is part of "La Protesta del 18," a movement of intellectuals who have raised their voices against the Cuban regime.
