Authorities in Las Tunas captured one of the individuals involved in the brutal assault that left an elderly man seriously injured in the Berrocal neighborhood of the municipality of Colombia early Tuesday morning, according to official sources.

The Facebook profile "Claridad Tunera", linked to the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), reported on Wednesday that a group of criminals broke into the victim's home on March 31 and brutally assaulted them with the aim of robbery. Among the items stolen were batteries of a solar panel system, a horse from the stable, a saddle, and cash.

The report noted that the actions of authorities from various municipalities, with the support of the community, made it possible to arrest one of the individuals involved in the assault, and it assured that the others "will also be captured and brought to justice." So far, the identity of the detained individual has not been revealed.

A report from the Facebook page "La Tijera" specified that the victim is a 72-year-old cattle rancher who was attacked by between five and six assailants, with "excessive violence." The elderly man sustained numerous blows to the head, face, and the rest of his body, resulting in severe bruises and serious facial injuries.

The publication added that the injured person was urgently transferred to the hospital in Colombia, but due to the seriousness of the injuries, particularly to the head, it was planned to transfer him to the provincial hospital of Las Tunas for specialized medical care.

This type of incident is set against a backdrop of increasing insecurity in the province of Las Tunas. In 2025, over 300 crimes were recorded in a single week, according to official data; and in September, the authorities once again acknowledged a deterioration in security in the area.

Among the cases that have raised alarm in the region are incidents such as the the theft of a motorcycle by two young men wearing masks and armed and the assault on a security guard by two men in Majibacoa.

Violence has also affected the livestock sector: cattle thieves caused the death of several cattle.

Nationally, the Cuban Observatory of Citizen Audit (OCAC) reported 2,833 verified crimes in Cuba during 2025, in an investigation that highlighted the alarming increase in crime throughout the country.
