A woman was captured by the security cameras of a private business in Playa municipality, Havana, while stealing a piece of meat and a mobile phone from an employee, unaware that the establishment had surveillance installed.

The incident was publicly reported on  by journalist Daniel Benítez, who received the testimony and images from a follower directly affected by the theft.

"She went into the kitchen of a private business and stole a piece of meat and my nephew's phone. I would appreciate it if you could publish this today; I’ll send you photos and the video from the camera that she didn’t think was there."

This type of theft in private businesses in Havana has become increasingly common.

Recently, a couple was recorded stealing a cellphone at the La Flaca café, in an incident that was also captured on camera.

Other similar cases have involved food. In one of the most striking incidents, two women stole enormous blocks of cheese from a small business, an event that was also captured by the store's cameras.

Security recordings have become the primary tool for citizen reporting.

In light of the perception of impunity, many property owners choose to post the videos directly on social media instead of going to the Police, hoping that public pressure will serve as a means of identification and control.

The municipality of Playa is not immune to this phenomenon. Previously, a news story circulated when an individual was caught stealing two bicycles in broad daylight in that same municipality.

Among the most unusual cases reported in Havana, three women were caught stealing six bottles of whiskey using an uncommon method, while another person stole a box of products from a café in Marianao while the owners were present.
