A young man and his partner were arrested this Wednesday following the death of a newborn in the neighborhood Abel Santamaría, known as El Salao, in Santiago de Cuba, in a case that has shocked the local residents.
The independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada confirmed on social media that "a newborn baby lost their life following an act of violence that occurred minutes after their birth, inside a home" in Micro 3 of that neighborhood.
The mother, identified as Annoris Despaigne Monje, 20 years old, gave birth without medical assistance at home.
After the delivery, she was transferred to the Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Juan Bruno Zayas, where the case was recorded as an out-of-hospital delivery.
According to information from the hospital, the young woman reportedly gave a statement in which she acknowledged her involvement in the events, allegedly claiming to have been a victim of a prior sexual assault.
That element was not known to his relatives, as revealed by the communicator.
The statement has not been officially confirmed by the authorities so far.
What is confirmed, according to Mayeta Labrada, is that "both the mother and her partner are currently in formal detention while the investigations progress."
Officials from the National Police, Crime Scene Investigation, and Legal Medicine operated both at the scene of the incident and at the hospital.
The exact authorship and circumstances of the case remain under investigation, and the journalist clarified that he will not assign definitive responsibility until official conclusions are reached.
Visual material related to the case circulated on mobile devices. Mayeta Labrada pointed out that she received it and chose not to share it: "The dignity of the minor is above any informational consideration."
The journalist named the case "Silenced Wings" and explained why: "It's not just about a life that ended, but about a life that never had the chance to begin. An innocent being whose story was interrupted in its very first moment. A silence that hurts and that today shakes an entire community."
As the authorities continue their investigations, key questions remain about the young woman's surroundings, the conditions under which the birth took place, and the possible prior circumstances that may have influenced this outcome.
Outrage and debate on social media
The news has sparked a wave of reactions on social media, where outrage, pain, and also debate about the social and familial causes behind such events have dominated.
Some comments reflect the harshness of popular sentiment. "I can't help but think about what kind of youth we have been raising, what values we are instilling in our children," expressed an internet user, questioning the development of the new generations.
Others pointed to the lack of alternatives or prior decisions: "If they were a victim of abuse, why not report it? Why not put it up for adoption?" wrote another user, amidst the general confusion.
There were also those who urged caution in light of the lack of definitive information: “Something doesn’t add up in this story… let’s wait for definitive conclusions,” remarked a commentator.
In parallel, some messages introduced nuances about the complexity of the case: “Not all women react the same way after a rape... it doesn't justify what he did, but she alone will know what she was going through”, commented another internet user.
The reactions also reveal a broader social background. "When a society loses its values, it brings such consequences," wrote one user, while another lamented: "How sad it all is!... children don't ask to come into the world."
The case has also reopened the debate about family responsibility and the surrounding environment: “Pregnancies don’t happen overnight… didn’t the family know anything?” questioned another person.
While awaiting official information, the case continues to generate shock in Santiago de Cuba. The death of a newborn under violent circumstances again highlights deep-seated issues ranging from violence and mental health to access to services and social insecurity.
For now, the authorities are keeping the investigation open while an entire community tries to understand how a tragedy of this magnitude could have happened.
This case occurs in a context of growing concern about violence against minors in Cuba. In July 2025, the regime approved a new Children's Code amid reports of increasing domestic violence and newborn deaths, a phenomenon also linked to the extreme poverty affecting the island after decades of dictatorship.
