A multisectoral team successfully transported a pregnant woman with twins from the community of El Dajao, in the municipality of El Salvador, Guantánamo province, to a hospital center, in a rescue operation conducted over dirt and rocky roads under extreme conditions.

The action was made possible thanks to the coordination of the Integrated Medical Emergency System (SIUM) of Guantánamo, the Cuban Red Cross, the Maternal-Infant Care Program (PAMI), and the Provincial Health Directors, who mobilized Toyota Land Cruiser off-road vehicles marked with the Red Cross to reach the patient.

The incident was disclosed on social media by the rescuer Aris Arias Batalla, a member of the team from Santiago de Cuba that participated in the operation, who highlighted the work of his colleague, the doctor Wilfredo Piñeiro, as a key figure in the operation.

The operation highlights the challenges faced by rural communities in the eastern region of Cuba, where more than 82% of the Guantánamo area is mountainous, significantly complicating access to health services in emergency situations.

This geographical reality particularly impacts communities that lack adequate roads, electricity, and other basic services, making each urgent medical transfer a high-risk logistical mission, noted IPS.

This is not the first time such operations have taken place in the region. Previously, other patients have been evacuated by helicopter from a remote area in Guantánamo, highlighting the recurring challenges faced by the more isolated communities of the province.

"The joint action of the SIUM Guantánamo, the Cuban Red Cross, PAMI, and the General Directors of Health made it possible to overcome the challenges on the ground and ensure timely medical care," emphasized the participating team in the operation.
