The Cuban authorities are searching for Orlando Rey, known as "El Bufón," the main suspect in the murder of Oreste Sosa Acosta, whose body was found a little over a month ago in the municipality of Palmira, in the province of Cienfuegos, according to sources related to the Ministry of the Interior (Minint).
Since the body was discovered, Orlando Rey has fled and remains at large, evading law enforcement, noted the profile "Las Cosas de Fernanda" on Facebook.
According to the publication, the police have launched an active search in areas such as Horquitas and Yaguaramas, in the municipality of Abreus, and in Aguada de Pasajeros, localities where the suspect has been seen. Authorities are operating under the hypothesis that the fugitive is attempting to escape to the northern part of the country.
To aid in their identification, modified images created using artificial intelligence have been circulated, depicting "their possible current appearance, which may range from a bearded and unkempt face to a clean-shaven one to mislead."
Authorities have called for citizen collaboration, urging anyone with information regarding their whereabouts to inform the relevant authorities.
The official profile text reveals the intention to shift to the population a responsibility that belongs primarily to state institutions, particularly the police: "The security of a community does not solely depend on the authorities, but also on the will of its citizens to protect one another," it stated.
In this regard, the page calls on individuals to assist in the apprehension of the murder suspect, considering it not only "an act of responsibility" but also "a commitment to peace, to the memory of the victim, and to everyone's right to live peacefully and within the established order."
The case shakes a municipality that was already bearing the weight of other recent crimes. On November 30, 2025, nurse Rosa Idania Ferrer Pérez was murdered by her partner in the batey Elpidio Gómez.
The province of Cienfuegos was also the scene of a double murder on June 29, 2025, in which one of the suspects remained at large for weeks before being captured, a pattern that is now repeating with the case of "El Bufón."
These events occur within a context of increasing insecurity throughout Cuba, exacerbated by economic deterioration and the weakening of police forces, with approximately 20% of the personnel leaving the force in the past year.
According to the Cuban Observatory of Citizen Audit, in 2025 there were 2,833 verified crimes on the island, a 115% increase compared to 2024 and a 337% rise compared to 2023, figures that contradict the official narrative of the regime, which claims a general decline in crime.
