Tamara González Hernández, a Cuban resident in Cárdenas, Matanzas, who is suffering from stage three uterine cancer, received the funds raised from a solidarity campaign this Wednesday, and on Thursday departed for the Oncology Hospital in Havana to begin her treatment, as announced by the activist Kiryat Poey on his social media.
Poey launched the campaign last Tuesday after revealing the critical situation of Tamara, who could not travel to Havana due to a lack of financial resources and was facing serious complications stemming from the radiotherapy she had previously received.
The patient suffers from a fistula that causes constant leakage and bleeding, has required multiple blood transfusions, and lives with a constant risk of severe infections, conditions that make the continuation of her oncology treatment urgent.
Yesterday, Poey handed over the funds raised to Tamara's daughter, as the patient herself was at home experiencing a new episode of bleeding.
The documented transfer was for 54,621.00 Cuban pesos, carried out yesterday and confirmed through a screenshot published by the activist.
The case of Tamara reflects a structural crisis in the Cuban healthcare system, where recent reports indicate that the system is on the verge of collapse with 16,000 oncology patients who are not receiving adequate care, while the hospital infrastructure can only accommodate a maximum of 9,000 patients annually.
This situation is exacerbated by a surgical waiting list that reached 96,387 patients in March 2026, a figure that highlights the deterioration of the healthcare system and the desperation of thousands of Cuban families who, like Tamara's, rely on community solidarity to access basic treatments.
"Today was one of those days that are worth it… one of those that reminds you why we do this," wrote Poey as he announced the news, summarizing the human impact of a campaign that managed to mobilize resources in just a few days for a patient who had no other options.
