The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issued an official request to the Cuban State to provide an account regarding the situation of Jonathan David Muir Burgos, a 16-year-old adolescent who has been detained on the island since March 16.

The request was formally directed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, and provided a strict deadline of five days to receive a detailed response regarding the case, reported Martí Noticias.

The request was driven by the Centro de Denuncias Defensa CD, a Cuban exile organization in Miami, which submitted a petition for protective measures on behalf of the minor to the inter-American body.

Jonathan is the son of evangelical pastor Elier Muir Ávila and was arrested in Morón after participating in public protests. Since then, he faces a formal charge of sabotage, one of the most serious offenses under Cuban law.

The Cuban judicial system has responded harshly to attempts by his family to secure his release. A court rejected both the habeas corpus and the request for a change of precautionary measure submitted by the defense. Shortly thereafter, the Municipal Prosecutor's Office of Morón ordered preventive detention for the minor, further complicating his situation.

The case has crossed borders and generated reactions in the United States Congress. U.S. Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar demanded the release of the teenager, and Congressman Carlos Giménez did the same two days later, adding international pressure on the Cuban regime.

The context in which Jonathan was detained is part of a broader wave of repression. According to reports, residents of the El Vaquerito popular council took to the streets to protest, which triggered a repressive response from the authorities. Cubalex identified at least 14 people arrested for those demonstrations, including another 16-year-old adolescent.

"The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is demanding explanations directly from the Cuban dictatorship. This means that Jonathan's case is no longer an isolated complaint and has come under formal international scrutiny," highlighted the advocates of the petition.
