The police arrested a man who was a fugitive from justice and was caught committing a crime in the Salomé neighborhood of the city of Camagüey, according to an official source.

The individual was "actively sought by the authorities" and was discovered "committing crimes" during surveillance operations, according to information published on the profile "Truths Through the Mobile" on Facebook, linked to the Ministry of the Interior (Minint). The detained individual has been made available to the courts, the report confirmed.

The authorities did not disclose the name of the person captured, the crimes he was committing at the time of his arrest, or the background that had led him to be on the run.

The pattern of official communication consists of announcing successful captures without accounting for how the prisoners or perpetrators of criminal acts managed to escape or what system failures allowed it to happen.

The publication celebrated the police action with the usual triumphalism of the ruling party: "The operation demonstrates the constant work of our law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety and uphold the law. For a safer Camagüey is the motto of a police force that acts tirelessly."

However, the incident occurs amid a context of increasing insecurity in Camagüey. In April, in a single week, two women were attacked with bladed weapons near the Train Terminal, in an attempt to steal their bicycles.

A worker was shot dead in Esmeralda, Camagüey, during a robbery attempt, while guarding a food warehouse.

In the Salomé neighborhood itself, a violent incident shook the community in August 2024: a 23-year-old was stabbed to death by a man who was on temporary release from prison due to a previous crime and fled after the attack.

In the past year, there have been multiple escapes of inmates from prisons in various provinces. Last December, the Camagüey police captured an escaped inmate from the La Empresita Open Unit, located thanks to reports from neighbors.

That same month, a fugitive prisoner from the Boniato prison in Santiago de Cuba was captured in Guantánamo while participating in an illegal cattle slaughter.

At a national level, the public security crisis shows no signs of abating. The Cuban Citizen Audit Observatory -an independent organization- documented 2,833 verified crimes in 2025, a 115% increase compared to 2024 and a 337% increase over 2023, with thefts as the predominant crime: 1,536 cases, a 479% rise since 2023.

Approximately 20% of the police force has left the department in the past year, weakening the institutional response to a crime rate that continues to rise under 67 years of dictatorship.
