A year after the death of Daylon Fleitas González, a 37-year-old Cuban resident of Hialeah, his family continues to seek relief.
On Monday, August 3rd, the first anniversary of the crime was marked, and his brother Marlon Fleitas spoke with Univision to make it clear that they will not rest until the responsible party is brought to justice.
That same day, Marlon and his mother started the day by visiting the cemetery where Daylon, the father of three children, is laid to rest.
"This morning I got up and picked up my mom, and we went to the cemetery. It's really painful, just imagine, what can I tell you?" Marlon recounted, summarizing the emotional state of the entire family.
The victim's brother described a conversation that repeats between him and his mother, Carmen, reflecting the impossibility of adapting to the absence.
"My mom asks me if I'm getting used to it. She tells me, 'I'm not getting used to it,' and she asks me, 'Are you getting used to it?' and I tell her that I'm not either," he pointed out.
“That person has to pay, very well, they have to pay for what they did,” said the victim's brother about the main accused, Alfredo Carballo González.
The judicial process is advancing with delays that have prolonged the family's anguish.
In the latest hearing, a tentative date was set for the start of the trial at the end of August 2026, postponed from May due to a lack of agreement between the defense and the prosecution and the absence of the defendants in a virtual hearing.
Carballo remains in the Miami-Dade County jail without the right to bail, charged with second-degree murder with a weapon, armed robbery—an additional charge added in May 2026—and tampering with physical evidence.
His ex-partner, Ariely Álvarez Cabrera, faces charges of concealment and evidence tampering, and remains under house arrest.
What happened on August 3, 2025?
Daylon left his home in Hialeah to collect a debt of 10,000 dollars that Carballo, a close friend, owed him, and never returned.
Surveillance cameras in a truck parking lot in Medley, Florida, captured the violent altercation and Carballo dragging Daylon's body toward a blue recycling bin located at the back of the victim's truck.
After the crime, Carballo used Daylon's phone to send WhatsApp messages to his wife, pretending to be him and claiming that he had been arrested by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and had fled to Mexico.
The body was found on August 9, 2025 inside the container, in a wooded area of southwestern Miami-Dade, with multiple stab wounds.
Escape to Mexico and extradition
After the crime, Carballo and Álvarez Cabrera fled to Mexico with their five-month-old baby. Álvarez Cabrera was arrested there in September 2025 and extradited to Florida, where she was placed under house arrest after paying a bail of $200,000.
Carballo was captured on January 27, 2026, and extradited to Miami, where on February 19 he pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial.
Daylon's mother, Carmen, summed up the family's sentiment with each postponement of the process: "We will never have peace again because they took a piece of our family from us."
