The slugger of the Houston Astros, born in Las Tunas, Cuba, tops his official statistical profile on MLB.com with an OPS of 1.051 in 472 at-bats, figures that establish him as the most dominant hitter in the American League during this crucial stretch of the season.
In the race for the batting title, Álvarez maintains a comfortable lead: his 14-point advantage over Chandler Simpson, who is second with a .308 average, provides him with some breathing room in that category.
The race for the home run leadership is much tighter. With 36 home runs, the Cuban player leads by just one over Junior Caminero and Ben Rice, both of whom have 35, meaning that any game could change the standings in this category.
In home run races, the situation has also intensified. Álvarez shares the top spot with Pete Alonso of the Baltimore Orioles, both with 91, while Caminero is in third place with 84, seven behind the leaders.
The 2026 season has been a monumental comeback for Álvarez, who only played 48 games in 2025 due to a fracture in his right hand and a sprained left ankle. Since April, he has led multiple offensive categories in MLB, in May he was named Player of the Month in the American League, and by July he was already being considered the top candidate for the Triple Crown.
As August begins, Álvarez increased his lead with a .330 batting average, 35 home runs, and 84 RBIs, before the competition tightened in the following weeks.
His candidacy for the American League Most Valuable Player award is overwhelming: MLB.com polls place him in first with 181 points and 34 first-place votes, and betting markets have him as the favorite with odds ranging from -900 to -2000.
Conquering the Triple Crown would be a historic achievement. In the American League, no batter has accomplished this since Miguel Cabrera, with the Detroit Tigers, did so in 2012 with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs, and 139 RBIs. Cabrera was also the first Latin American to reach this milestone in the league's history.
If Álvarez maintains the lead in all three categories until the end of the season, he would become the first hitter to win the Triple Crown in the American League in 14 years.
