A traffic accident that occurred on the afternoon of this Friday in Sagua de Tánamo, a municipality in the province of Holguín, left at least three people dead and five injured after the impact of a makeshift tractor against a motorcycle and several trees, according to information confirmed by journalist Yulianela Bárzaga Gómez from the station Radio Ecos de Sagua.
According to senior forensic expert José Pérez López, a homemade tractor known as "riquimbili" was traveling from Sagua de Tánamo towards the town of El Jobo when, in the section near the social circle, it collided from behind with a motorcycle that was moving in the same direction.
"Apparently, the tractor driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the trees, resulting in the death of three people and injuring five others, including the two on the motorcycle," specified the expert, as reported by the source in an update on the incident through Bárzaga's Facebook profile.
The vehicle belongs to the individual identified as El Gato, he added.
The three deceased individuals were identified as Addiel Laurencio Torrente, 19 years old, resident of Castro; Onel Salazar Leyva, 28 years old, from El Jobo; and Inelvis Crespo Matos, 55 years old, from Zabala.
Among the five injured, Yonner Matos Garlobo, 38 years old, suffered multiple traumas and was taken to the Holguín Clinical and Surgical Hospital.
Liuber Robles Videaux, 40 years old, from El Jobo, was admitted to the Municipal Intensive Care Unit awaiting transfer to the same hospital.
Yasser Laurencio Torrente, 17 years old, from the Castro area, was reported as stable at the municipal hospital, while Nelson Capdesuña Ramírez, 28 years old, was undergoing trauma protocol.
Leonardo Romero Herrera, 25 years old, was awaiting transfer to Guillermo Luis Hospital in Moa.
The authorities of the Minint were continuing their investigations at the close of the report.
The incident adds to a series of recent traffic accidents in Holguín and highlights the serious road safety crisis facing Cuba, despite the energy crisis and the contraction of road transportation.
According to the National Road Safety Commission, in 2025, there were 7,538 traffic accidents registered across the country, resulting in 750 fatalities and 6,718 injuries, figures that exceed those of 2024, when 634 people died in road incidents.
Handcrafted vehicles, made with limited materials, are widespread in rural areas due to a lack of transportation and pose a recurring risk on roads with poor signage and inadequate maintenance.
