A Cuban citizen identified as Omar Luis «N» was linked to a criminal process this Friday after being accused of his alleged involvement in the crime of aggravated assault against a hotel employee in Cancun, according to a statement from the Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo.
According to the prosecution, the events under investigation reportedly took place on August 29 at a hotel located on Sunyaxchen Avenue, in the municipality of Benito Juárez, which includes the city of Cancun and its hotel zone.
According to initial investigations, Omar Luis "N" allegedly appeared at the reception area to report the suspected theft of belongings from his room.
When the employee asked him to wait, the accused allegedly jumped over the counter, took a knife from one of his pockets, and attacked the worker, inflicting cuts on her neck and chest.
The prosecutor's office detailed that the assault "caused extensive bleeding" in the victim, who managed to run out of the establishment to seek help and was transported to a nearby hospital. Her identity remains protected.
Following the complaint, agents from the Investigation Police executed an arrest warrant against the accused.
A Control Judge reviewed the evidence provided by the prosecution and issued an order for linkage to proceedings due to probable involvement in acts that may constitute the crime of aggravated injuries, a classification in the Penal Code of Quintana Roo that applies when the aggression is carried out with premeditation, treachery, advantage, betrayal, or malice, and can increase the penalty by up to two-thirds compared to simple injuries.
The judge also imposed the precautionary measure of preventive detention for up to two years or for the duration of the judicial process.
The case occurs in a context of multiple incidents involving Cuban citizens in Cancun throughout 2026.
On the same day, August 29, it was reported that a Cuban was detained at the Zara store in Plaza La Isla for an alleged attempt at theft.
Days later, authorities were searching for another Cuban as a suspected perpetrator of an armed attack in the Villas Otoch neighborhood that resulted in one death and two injuries, and that same week four Cubans were arrested following a police chase that ended with a vehicle crashing into National Guard facilities.
In this tense atmosphere, the CISVAC organization has documented acts of xenophobia against the Cuban community in the city, including signs stating "no Cubans allowed" and refusals to rent housing.
The government of Quintana Roo has publicly called for not stigmatizing the entire community based on the behavior of individuals, while Cuban community leaders have distinguished between migrants who come to work and those deported from the United States with criminal records.
