A 41-year-old Cuban was arrested in the early hours of Friday in downtown Monterrey, Nuevo León, after municipal agents allegedly found him carrying a machete and disturbing the public order, according to the police report. Authorities are also investigating whether he was involved in an assault hours earlier in which another man was injured.
The detained individual, identified as Lázaro "N," was intercepted around 12:40 AM at the intersection of Juan Álvarez and Carlos Salazar streets, according to a report by the newspaper Vanguardia.
According to the police report cited by that outlet, the officers observed the man with a machete in a public area. The police state that when they attempted to approach him, he adopted an aggressive stance and refused to follow the officers' instructions, which led to his arrest.
During a search, agents found among his belongings 12 Ziploc bags containing a powdered substance, according to the authorities.
There are differences between press reports regarding the contents of the bags. Vanguardia states that it would have characteristics similar to "crystal," while El Porvenir reported that it would be cocaine. At the time of these publications, there had been no laboratory analysis reported that confirmed the composition of the substance.
Authorities are also investigating whether Lázaro "N" was involved in an assault that occurred hours earlier at the intersection of Juan Álvarez and Arteaga.
"It is presumed that the male, hours earlier, assaulted another man at Juan Álvarez and Arteaga, where, armed with a machete, he inflicted injuries to the hand and chest," stated the Monterrey Police.
The alleged involvement of the detained individual in that assault has not been legally established.
After his arrest, he was transferred to the municipal corporation's facilities and turned over to the Public Ministry, which is responsible for continuing the investigations and determining his legal status.
So far, the version of the detainee or their defense regarding the allegations against them has not been publicly disclosed.
The case occurs just a few days after two Cubans were arrested in Toluca for alleged crimes of theft and drug dealing.
Also recently, another Cuban citizen was arrested in Cancun accused of attacking a hotel receptionist with a knife.
In May, Mexican authorities charged another Cuban in Chiapas with attempted homicide after he was accused of allegedly stabbing and threatening to kill a man in Palenque.
