The official account of the United States Department of State published a video on X this Monday featuring statements from Secretary Marco Rubio, in which he defines radical leftism as "a distinct and unique evil" driven, in his words, by "a hatred for civilization itself."
The clip, just over a minute long, is an excerpt from the speech delivered by Rubio on July 16, 2026, before representatives from 65 nations gathered at the Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism, a conference convened by the Secretary of State himself to articulate an international response to extreme left violence.
In the video, Rubio describes the phenomenon as “a revolt of the worst against the best, of the weak and cowardly against the strong and good,” perpetrated by those who “cannot build, cannot create, cannot achieve great things” and seek revenge on the world by destroying those who can.
The Secretary of State emphasizes that radical leftism adopts different labels depending on the time and place, but its essence remains the same: "They may call themselves anti-capitalists, anti-imperialists, communists, anarchists, or Marxists, but the fundamental character is always the same".
"It is a poisonous resentment disguised with the language of equality, justice, and liberation, an overwhelming need to tear down what greater men have built, to destroy what is beautiful and what is just, in the name of people who are only filled with ugliness and have nothing else to offer," Rubio stated.
The video is part of a sustained ideological offensive by the Trump administration against communism, with Cuba as the central focus of the discourse.
Four days after that ministerial meeting in July, the Department of State published the report “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism,” a document of nearly 100 pages in which Rubio accused the Cuban regime of being “the main sponsor of radical leftism and third-worldism in the United States” for more than six decades.
The Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla described that report as a "slanderous pamphlet", while the leader Miguel Díaz-Canel accused Washington of being a "neofascist regime."
The anti-communist campaign of the Trump administration officially began in November 2025, when the president proclaimed the "Anti-Communist Week" from the second to the eighth of that month.
Since then, Rubio has maintained constant pressure on Havana: in March 2026 he stated that “the only thing worse than a communist is an incompetent communist”; in September, before the UN General Assembly, he declared that the Cuban Revolution “has failed for over 60 years”; and just last week he insisted that “Cuba has already fallen” and that the regime will learn the consequences of not changing course.
