Radio Ángulo, another station in Cuba affected by the blackouts

Radio Ángulo, the provincial station of Holguín, announced this Thursday that starting from this date, it may be on air for only a few hours or may not broadcast at all, due to the direct consequence of the new schedule for electrical rotations in the province.

The problem has a specific technical cause: the station's headquarters belong to circuit 2, while its transmitter, located at Loma de la Cruz, belongs to circuit 1.

The electricity schedules of both circuits do not align, making transmission impossible even when one of the two points has available power. In each circuit, the electrical availability is only three hours every twelve.

"The station belongs to circuit 2, while our transmitter, located at Loma de la Cruz, is part of circuit 1. Since the electricity schedules do not align, the transmission may be interrupted. In both cases, there are only three hours of electricity available every twelve hours," the station explained in its publication.

The station is equipped with solar panels, but their capacity of 2 kW is significantly lower than the actual consumption of the plant, which amounts to 15 kW. Furthermore, this solar generation does not solve the problem of the transmitter when it lacks electricity, nor does it allow for internet broadcasting or access to the station's server.

"Although Radio Angulo is just one block away from the prioritized circuit in the city center, our station is not included among the prioritized centers," the publication stated.

The listeners erupted in outrage: "Unprecedented! If Manuel Angulo Farran were to come back... Unfathomable, terrible, incredible! Where are the leaders of this province? If a cyclone or an earthquake were to strike... It's hard to be alive to see this... Oh my father, my colleagues," said one of them.

"It is totally unacceptable that the Provincial Radio Station, being so close to the island that was recently built in that area, has been left out of it!! This must be rectified!" emphasized another resident.

It is not the first time that the broadcaster has faced this situation. In early 2026, the power outages had already left Radio Ángulo and other stations in Holguín without a signal when the deterioration of the generators at the Loma de la Cruz transmission center forced RadioCuba to seek a 200-amp battery to reactivate the equipment.

The case of Radio Ángulo adds to a pattern that is repeated throughout the Island. Radio Victoria, from Las Tunas, has been off the air for more than 35 days since August 24.

In May, the Boniato transmission center simultaneously disrupted the signal for several stations and channels in Santiago de Cuba, including Radio Rebelde, Radio Progreso, and Cubavisión.

For this Thursday, the Electric Union foresees a deficit exceeding 1,800 MW, with an available generation of just 1,210 MW against a demand of 3,000 MW.

On October 8th, a disconnection from the National Electric System affected the entire eastern region—from Holguín to Guantánamo—due to a fluctuation in the transmission lines that disabled units of the Felton, Diez de Octubre, and Antonio Maceo thermoelectric plants.

"All of our staff—hosts, sound technicians, journalists, managers, and support workers—regrets this situation, which prevents us from providing you with timely information, topics of interest, and the music that accompanies the people of Holguín in our province, in Cuba, and around the world," concluded the station, which celebrated its 90th anniversary of broadcasting this year.
