The Cuban government acknowledged that blackouts will continue throughout 2026, despite maintenance work and the addition of new generation capacities.
The Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy, stated that next year will be "difficult," although slightly better than 2025, which is marked by one of the worst energy crises of the last decade.
2026 will be a challenging year, slightly better, with different conditions because we are better prepared. We will have more generation, but we will not eliminate blackouts. There will be a decrease, but there is still a long way to go, he said in an interview with the official newspaper Granma.
The minister explained that, despite the progress in the capital maintenance of several thermoelectric units and the expansion of renewable energies, the country will continue to face a severe fuel deficit, the main cause of the prolonged power outages.
