A tragic traffic accident occurred in the early hours of this Sunday on the National Highway, near Aguada de Pasajeros in Cienfuegos province, leaving at least two people dead and several injured. The news generated significant attention on social media, where users and family members shared details about the incident and messages of condolence.
According to reports from independent communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, the incident involved a bus carrying passengers from the eastern part of the country. Among the deceased are the two drivers of the vehicle.
The official page Las Cosas de Fernanda.2 reported that the accident occurred at kilometer 188 of the highway, when the driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the rear of a trailer. According to that source, at least 13 people were injured, including two minors with minor injuries, although the authorities have not confirmed that figure or the names of the victims.
On social media, family and friends shared heartfelt messages and testimonials. “My dad was on that bus and he is alive by miracle. There were many injured, except for my dad and a few children who were traveling there,” recounted a user identified as La Negrita Linda de Shango. Another woman, Dari Tamayo, commented through tears, “One of the deceased is my sister's uncle. May God keep Miguelito in His Holy Glory.” A close friend of one of the victims, Oracio Águilar, also confirmed the death of a driver: “A driver who died was on that bus, a great friend and brother of mine. Rest in peace, brother.”
Other users, such as Yanis Corralez and Vladis Urquía, desperately wrote in search of news about relatives whose phones remained turned off after the disaster. The post generated hundreds of reactions and requests for information from various provinces across the country.
The Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, for his part, expressed his sorrow over the accident in a message posted on his official account on X (Twitter), where he extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
This new incident occurs just a month and a half after another accident in the same area, when a bus from the company Transtur traveling from Guantánamo to Havana went off the road at kilometer 183 of the National Highway, also in Aguada de Pasajeros. In that event, two people died and 18 were injured, one of them seriously.
Users on social media reported that this type of tragedy frequently occurs in the central region of the country, due to the poor condition of the roads, the lack of technical maintenance on the buses, and the inadequate lighting on the National Highway. "In Cuba, almost all bus accidents happen in Cienfuegos or Guantánamo; the highways are unprotected and lack proper signage," commented an internet user.
The tragic event has caused distress among family members and travelers, amidst the increase in traffic accidents in Cuba during the last weeks of the year, a problem that continues to claim lives on the country's roads.
