Dramatic accident between a car and a tricycle on the Santiago de Cuba highway

The young man who passed away was only 21 years old.

A serious traffic accident occurred tonight on the highway in Santiago de Cuba, near the Carretera del Caney and the Cubalse store, an intersection known for its danger due to poor lighting and the high frequency of accidents.

According to witnesses -quoted by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta- a man between 60 and 70 years old, driving a red vehicle, invaded the opposite lane and collided with a tricycle, causing the light vehicle to overturn.

Another person who passed by the scene and recorded it stated that the accident occurred because the car experienced a steering failure, which led to the impact.

The incident has raised concerns among the residents of the area, who have expressed their unease about the lack of lighting and the dangerous conditions of that road.

"The streets with a terrible darkness, the cars in Cuba that often don’t even have lights. My God, what a disaster! How much longer is this going to last?"; "Be very careful at that intersection, it’s very dangerous and there have been many deaths. Wishing a speedy recovery for the gentleman"; "But they should light that area up, don’t they realize it’s a dangerous intersection? Oh my God! What is going on?" were some of the comments.

An internet user referred to the death of a 21-year-old from Altamira in an accident "on the Caney road," but it is not clear if this is the same incident.

There was also a reference to another accident that occurred recently in which an elderly man was partially run over by a motorcyclist.

As of the time of this report, there are no further details about the accident on the Santiago de Cuba highway.

According to data from the National Road Safety Commission, last year there were 7,507 traffic accidents, which is a 12% decrease from the 2023 figures (8,556).

In addition, deaths decreased by 13% (634), and the number of injuries was 6,613, a 4% reduction compared to the accidents that occurred the previous year.

Authorities insist that the main causes are driver violations, followed by the poor condition of the roads due to a lack of maintenance and the aging vehicle fleet, which averages between 40 and 70 years old.
