The buying and selling of currencies in Cuba starts the day with new developments for the second consecutive day: today the dollar rises, as does the euro.

At 7:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the US dollar is selling for an average of 374 CUP, one peso more than the previous day.

In the case of the euro, it rises to 396 CUP, increasing by one unit and nearing 400, as revealed by the independent outlet elTOQUE.

Only today the freely convertible currency (MLC) remains unchanged, which is still valued at 260 CUP, the price it reached this Thursday after abruptly dropping by five units.

The informal market and ETECSA's "rate hike"

So far, the informal currency exchange market has barely reacted to the growing social tension in Cuba due to the ETECSA rate hike.

Despite the fact that the day after the controversial announcement, the average sale of the dollar briefly rose to 372, the U.S. currency quickly returned to 370 CUP.

However, this tendency towards stability seems to be changing.

The median values of buying and selling currencies place the selling price of the euro at 400 CUP this Friday, very close to its all-time high from last year.

Regarding the dollar, the median targets a market value of 375 CUP.

Pavel Vidal, chief economist at the Observatory of Currencies and Finances of Cuba (OMFi), warned last week that the exchange rate of the Cuban informal market is "highly volatile and sensitive to speculative and political factors."

Last week, it was revealed that the Observatory of Coins and Finance of Cuba (OMFi) has developed a methodology that, they claim, allows for a highly accurate prediction of the movements in the informal currency market on the island, particularly concerning the dollar.

An article published by elTOQUE stated that thanks to the use of artificial intelligence and econometric models, the OMFi has reached a 94% accuracy in its forecasts regarding the value of the dollar.

According to Pavel Vidal, the principal researcher of the project, the key to the model is the use of real-time data collected through artificial intelligence from social media and digital platforms where dollars, euros, and MLC are traded.

The mentioned source revealed that this informational advantage has significantly reduced uncertainty regarding the evolution of the exchange rate in Cuba at the grassroots level.
