A tragic traffic accident that occurred this Sunday in the municipality of Majagua, in the province of Ciego de Ávila, resulted in a preliminary toll of three fatalities and 33 injured; currently, three patients are in critical condition, including a child whose life is in imminent danger due to the severe injuries sustained.

Dr. Julio Díaz Agramonte, director of the Roberto Rodríguez General Teaching Hospital in Morón, stated that this hospital is treating eight patients: three of them are in critical condition and three others are serious.

Among the critics is a child with diffuse axonal injury, a traumatic brain injury that primarily affects the axons, the extensions of neurons responsible for transmitting nerve signals. The child is on a ventilator and is stable.

However, another minor has fractures in the tibia and pelvis and has lost a lot of blood. "That large pelvic fracture, he has lost a lot of blood due to this fracture, which led to shock, that is why he is intubated and in critical condition, but critical with imminent life-threatening danger," said the specialist.

The accident, which involved a state vehicle from the Hydraulic Resources Company, left 33 injured and three deceased.

Of the eight patients transferred to the Roberto Rodríguez Provincial Hospital in Morón, six are adults and two are minors. Medical authorities reported that aside from the two critically ill children, an adult aged 20 has a pulmonary contusion, right pneumothorax, and cranial fractures.

According to the medical staff of the hospital, the center immediately activated its emergency protocols, ensuring imaging resources, blood supplies, and the involvement of an expanded team of specialists. “Many healthcare workers who were at home volunteered in response to the scale of the accident,” stated Leonel Fuentes Ramos, specialist in Maternal and Child Nursing.

In addition to the three critically injured, other patients remain in serious but stable condition, and two more are under medical evaluation. In total, 25 injured individuals were treated at the Antonio Luaces Iraola Hospital in the main city, while the eight more serious cases have been referred to Morón.

The highest authorities of the municipality are at the hospital supporting the families and medical staff. The community has also responded with solidarity, organizing blood donations for the injured.

This accident adds to a worrying trend of traffic accidents on the island, where several serious incidents have been reported recently, including a violent collision on the Vía Blanca in Havana, which resulted in multiple injuries.
