In an alarming incident that left several witnesses on edge at Miami International Airport (MIA), a woman identified as Alvina Omisiri Agba, a 23-year-old British citizen, was arrested after snatching a four-year-old child from his mother’s arms and refusing to return him.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at one of the airport terminals and was halted thanks to the quick intervention of an employee and several passengers.

The moment of the attack

According to details from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) - cited by local press - the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. in the area of Security Checkpoint 5.

The child's mother, Nadine Joseph, was in line when her son began to cry and show signs of distress.

It was then that Agba offered to help her calm the youngest.

The mother momentarily allowed the woman to hold her son, but immediately afterward, Agba stepped out of line and walked away from the mother.

Joseph, noticing the suspicious behavior, quickly chased after her and demanded that she return his son. Agba's response was baffling: “No, this is my son”, the woman reportedly said, according to local media such as the Miami Herald.

Struggle and anguish: "She wrapped him with her legs and arms."

What followed was a moment of extreme tension.

According to the police report cited by Local 10, Agba "wrapped his arms and legs around the child, preventing him from moving," and even "pushed the mother" when she tried to regain her son.

Witnesses described scenes of screaming and confusion.

According to the supervisor of GlobalX Air, Dayanis Ojeda, cited by Local 10, “one of the passengers was holding a child in her arms... another passenger took the baby from the mother's hands and tried to grab the baby, striking the baby against the ground a couple of times.”

However, the police report does not confirm that the child was thrown to the ground, although it does detail that he was held firmly.

The heroine of the moment: Naylet Montano

The situation could have ended in tragedy if it weren't for the intervention of Naylet Montano, an airport worker, who witnessed the scene and acted decisively. “There was a woman on the floor holding the child tightly, at that moment I saw the child as being in danger, I grabbed the child and ran with him,” Montano told Univisión.

The worker led him behind the counter of the airline GlobalX Air to protect him, but Agba did not stop.

"The woman who was on the floor came towards me trying to take the child away from me. Since I wouldn't let her, I ran inside the counter and crouched down to protect him," Montano added.

Montano was not alone in her attempt to protect the child.
Three men physically intervened to create a barrier between her and the attacker. “Agba walked underneath the counter, shouting at Montano to ‘give back her son,’ but three men stepped in between Montano and Agba.”

Arrest, justifications, and charges

Shortly thereafter, and after receiving the alert to 911, MDSO agents were able to apprehend Agba.

In her initial statements to the authorities, the woman provided contradictory explanations.

According to the report cited by the Miami Herald, Agba stated that he remembered seeing “a wall painted with a rainbow” in the terminal and thought that “it would be a good idea to take it there to calm him down.”

However, later he changed his story: “I only did it because God told me to.”

Agba was arrested on charges of assault and "interference with custody," a crime in Florida that is punishable for having deprived a parent or legal guardian of access to their child. As of Tuesday afternoon, she was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK), with a total bail set at $3,500.

So far, there have been no reports regarding whether Alvina Omisiri Agba has legal representation.

No details have emerged regarding possible mental health assessments or the reasons that led her to commit this unusual act, beyond her mention of divine intervention.
