The University of Oriente in Santiago de Cuba announced the suspension of all its teaching activities starting this Monday, due to the heavy rains affecting the eastern region and the risk of flooding and landslides.

The measure will remain in effect until weather conditions permit, stated the university.

The information was published this Sunday on the official page of the institution on Facebook, where it is specified that the decision responds to alerts from the Civil Defense and the National Meteorological Service.

The university administration explained that the main objective is to safeguard the safety of students and staff, as well as to facilitate civil protection efforts in a climate emergency scenario.

The notice advises the academic community to stay in their homes or student residences, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain attentive to official communication channels, which will issue new alerts in case the suspension is extended.

In parallel, the University of Medical Sciences of Guantánamo also reported on Facebook the cancellation of the teaching process in all programs, except for final year students, as long as conditions permit.

The institution urged its university community to follow the updates posted on the official pages to learn the date for the resumption of activities.

The situation in the eastern part of the country remains complex due to the accumulated rainfall recorded in recent days, which has kept local authorities on alert.

Although the heavy rains associated with a tropical depression have impacted the educational process at several universities in eastern Cuba, the reservoirs in Santiago de Cuba have welcomed the precipitation.

The Charco Mono reservoir, one of the most affected by the drought in Santiago de Cuba, has achieved a significant recovery following the intense rains recorded in the region: in just 24 hours, it increased from dead storage to 55.1 percent of its capacity.

The reservoirs in the province increased their volume by 10.6 million cubic meters in the last day, with a total of 18.8 million over the past two days.

This increase represents a relief amid a tense water situation that has been experienced in the eastern province of Cuba for several months.

On the other hand, the Cuban Meteorological Institute (INSMET) issued this Sunday Tropical Cyclone Warning No. 3, in which it updated the situation of Tropical Depression Nine, a system that, although it remains largely unchanged in its structure, has generated intense rains and thunderstorms over eastern Cuba.
