Father of Cuban baseball player Yaser Julio González passes away

The Pinar del Río baseball player Yaser Julio González, one of the most prominent figures in recent seasons of the National Series, is going through a difficult personal moment following the passing of his father, who had been hospitalized for weeks fighting for his health.

The sad news was announced by sports narrator and commentator Ernesto Amaya Esquivel, who expressed on his Facebook account:

"We deeply regret the news of the passing of Yaser Julio González's father, who had been hospitalized for weeks fighting for his health. Yaser, a former player from Pinar del Río and highly regarded in the westernmost province, had moved to Havana this year to care for him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Yaser Julio and his entire family during this difficult time. May he rest in peace."

The sports journalist Yasel Porto also shared some heartfelt words in a video posted on social media, where he expressed sorrow over “very sad, painful news that has been circulating in the last few minutes through social media.”

“It concerns the passing of the father of one of the good players currently in the National Series… I’m referring to Yaser Julio González, who is currently on the roster of Industriales, after several years of stellar performance with Pinar del Río,” said Porto, who added: “My condolences to him, my heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and those close to both his father and Yaser Julio. Eternal light for the soul of his dad.”

A baseball player with the heart of a farmer

Although he was born in the Cerro municipality of Havana, Yaser Julio González has never hidden his admiration for the teams from Pinar del Río, which he considers a model of dedication and commitment.

As he mentioned in an interview with the newspaper Granma, “I have always had a fondness for the teams from Pinar del Río. Omar Linares is the one I have admired the most. Additionally, my mother was born there, so there are family ties that connect me to that land.”

Made his debut in the LI National Series (2011-2012) as an outfielder for the Metropolitanos team, but after the team's dissolution, he joined the roster of Pinar del Río, where he achieved his prominence.

In the LV Serie Nacional, he led several offensive departments with an average of .355 and ten home runs in just 45 games, figures that confirmed his hitting power.

For three years, he was in the Dominican Republic, training with the dream of reaching the Major Leagues. Upon his return to Cuba, he donned the uniform of Pinar del Río once again, where he regained his form and established himself as one of the standout home run hitters in Cuban baseball.

In the 60th season, he won the home run derby at the All-Star Game by hitting 15 home runs, and in the 61st season, he finished with 13 home runs, 52 RBIs, and 46 runs scored.

Beyond his statistics, González has been recognized for his discipline and character on the field. That's why the news of his father's passing has elicited expressions of affection and support from fans and colleagues across the country.
