The University of Guantánamo is going through one of its saddest moments in recent years, following the confirmation of the deaths of two young professors in less than a week. The news has caused deep shock among students, colleagues, and staff at the institution.
The first to pass away was Xavier Arrue Pinto, who served as the president of the University Student Federation (FEU) and secretary of the Committee of the Union of Young Communists (UJC) at the institution.
In an official statement, the university announced that Xavier was "an educator in the purest sense of the word," a man dedicated to teaching and social transformation.
“His passing, while still young, deeply pains us. It takes away a colleague full of projects, brilliant ideas, and a genuine commitment to education,” stated the academic institution. Colleagues and students remember him as a passionate, supportive person with contagious energy, always ready to help and inspire those around him.
Just a few days later, the university community once again donned mourning attire with the passing of Yassenia Lewis Esson, a young professor very dear to her students and colleagues.
In a message full of sorrow, the university bid her farewell as “a star whose light left an indelible mark in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.”
Your time with us was brief, but your spirit will live on forever in our memories and in the lessons of love you left us, added the institution.
The causes of the deaths have not been disclosed, but both losses have sparked a wave of messages of condolence and support for the families of the young educators. On social media, students and colleagues are sharing photos, anecdotes, and words of admiration for those who left such a deep impact on university life.
The University of Guantánamo has expressed its sorrow and has called on its community to keep alive the legacy of Xavier and Yassenia, remembering them for their commitment to education, their dedication to service, and their love for teaching.
