Citizens in Guantánamo are sanctioned for illegal livestock slaughter and assault on a PNR officer

Courts in Guantánamo have sentenced two citizens for the illegal slaughter of livestock and assault on a PNR officer. The sentences include imprisonment and additional measures, amidst an increase in similar crimes in Cuba.

The municipal courts of Guantánamo and Niceto Pérez sentenced two citizens to prison for the illegal slaughter of livestock and assaulting an officer, along with additional penalties.

One of the defendants was sentenced by the Municipal People's Court of Guantánamo to six years in prison for the illegal slaughter of large livestock and trafficking in beef.

During the oral trial, expert, documentary, and testimonial evidence was presented that proved the guilt of the defendant, reported the official newspaper Venceremos.

For its part, the Popular Municipal Tribunal of Niceto Pérez sentenced a 19-year-old young man to three years in prison for the crime of assault, after he "offended a member of the Revolutionary National Police at the PNR Unit of that locality" on June 11, the source emphasized.

Both citizens received additional penalties that include the deprivation of public rights, a prohibition on leaving the country, and the confiscation of assets seized during the investigation.

According to the media outlet, the procedural guarantees and due process enshrined in the Constitution were upheld.

In early October, The First Criminal Chamber of the Provincial People's Court of Artemisa sentenced two citizens to seven and eight years of imprisonment, respectively, for theft and illegal slaughter of large livestock.

At the end of September, the Provincial People's Court of Mayabeque , after he broke into a home in the municipality of Güines, where he threatened a father and his son with a machete.

A few days ago, four slaughterhouse workers were arrested in Ciego de Ávila, after being accused of systematically stealing livestock from farmers in the La Palma area, where they operated with complete impunity.

Previously, in Sancti Spíritus, a prisoner who was on temporary leave took the opportunity to steal a horse and slaughter it in his own home, located on Bayamo Street.

Additionally, a young man was caught attempting to steal a cow on the grounds of the former Salvador Rosales sugar mill, known as Algodonal, in Santiago de Cuba. He was subdued by the neighbors and, with his hands tied, forced to walk behind a horse-drawn cart.

The route passed through several streets of the community belonging to the municipality of Songo-La Maya and aimed to showcase it publicly.

In Holguín, a man was captured on video while sacrificing a horse in broad daylight, which sparked outrage and fear among the neighbors due to the impunity with which he acted.

A few weeks later, in Granma, authorities detained a group of slaughterers who were transporting beef in several private vehicles.

Cuban farmers report that the theft and slaughter of cattle remains rampant in the fields of the island, which severely impacts agricultural economics and food security.
