A Cuban mother issued an urgent appeal this Saturday from the Luis Mario Cruz Pediatric Hospital in the municipality of Banes, in the province of Holguín, to obtain the medication her youngest son needs, diagnosed with epilepsy and Wells syndrome.
The woman, identified as Yanislen Pérez, remains at the hospital caring for her two hospitalized children and needs Sodium Valproate.
The youngest, Jancel, who is just one year old, suffers from epilepsy and has lost his vision due to his illness, reported the activist Yenier Toledano Torres, who posted the information on Facebook.
His eldest son, Alejandro, seven years old, is also hospitalized due to fever and vomiting.
“URGENT - PLEASE SHARE Today, a desperate mother contacted me from the pediatric hospital in Banes. Yanislen Pérez needs sodium valproate for her child Jancel, who suffers from Wells syndrome and epilepsy. If anyone can help, please go to the hospital, respiratory room, beds 6 and 7,” posted Toledano Torres on social media.
The medication, commercially known as Sodium Valproate or Depakene, is essential for the control of epileptic seizures.
In Cuba, its scarcity has left hundreds of patients without treatment, leading to constant calls for help on social media and in local communities.
According to the information shared, those who are able to help can go directly to the pediatric hospital in Banes, in the respiratory room, or contact the mother at her address: calle Azucena #23, Banes, Holguín.
The post has been shared by dozens of users who are calling for solidarity with this family and denouncing the deterioration of the public health system, where basic medications are lacking even to treat chronic illnesses in children.
