Between Carts and Engines: The Dangerous Coexistence that Claims Lives in Cuba

The tragedy on the rural road is not an exception, but part of a pattern that repeats itself in various Cuban provinces.

For example, in the community of La Pedrona, municipality of Mayarí (Holguín), one Friday morning a motorcycle violently collided with a cart pulled by a horse, leaving the young driver seriously injured and the horse dead after the crash.

Another incident occurred in the province of Granma, in the town of Santa Rita: a jeep collided head-on with a horse-drawn cart and a metal pipe from the animal-drawn vehicle embedded itself in the body of the jeep passenger, who ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

And more recently, in the municipality of Guanabacoa, Havana, a motorcyclist riding on an unlit road collided head-on with a horse-drawn cart, dying on the spot.

These stories reflect a common denominator: carts navigating under conditions of minimal or no visibility, deteriorated or poorly marked roads, and the dangerous coexistence between motor vehicles and traditional means of transport. The result: lost lives, affected families, and a warning that should not be ignored.
