The serious traffic accident that occurred early this Monday in the La Caoba community, part of the Simón Reyes Popular Council in the municipality of Venezuela, Ciego de Ávila, resulted in a preliminary count of 27 injured, as confirmed by local media and hospital sources.
The accident occurred around 5:40 in the morning when a Girón bus collided with a cart carrying workers from the El Fortín Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS), from the same municipality.
According to initial reports from Televisión Avileña and Periódico Invasor, 24 of the injured were taken to the local polyclinic, while three with severe trauma were taken directly to the Provincial Hospital Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola, in the capital of Avila.
Three patients in critical condition
Dr. Inés Padrón González, a specialist in Intensive Care and Emergencies and head of the Emergency Service at the provincial hospital, confirmed the reception of 20 patients so far and warned that "not all cases have arrived yet."
The specialist explained that three of the injured individuals are in life-threatening condition: two with severe cranial injuries and one with closed abdominal trauma with free fluid in the cavity, with a high likelihood of requiring surgery.
“The rest of the patients treated are reported to be stable,” added Dr. Padrón. “Orthopedic injuries are predominant—contusions in the elbows, knees, and feet—as well as simple wounds that are being sutured by the minor surgery specialists.”
Several injured individuals with bumps and minor abrasions remain at the Polyclinic of Venezuela, and the transfer of a critically ill patient with a pelvic fracture and free fluid in the cavity is expected. This patient is currently under medical observation awaiting a surgical reevaluation.
Authorities aware of the incident
Authorities from Ciego de Ávila are at the Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial Hospital, led by Julio Gómez Casanova, the first secretary of the Communist Party in the province, and Alfredo Menéndez, the governor of the territory. They are closely monitoring the medical care provided to the injured, as reported by Televisión Avileña.
The accident —which involved a state-owned mass transport vehicle and an animal-drawn cart— occurred in a rural area where the pavement conditions and limited visibility in the early morning hours may have influenced the impact, although the causes are still under investigation.
CiberCuba continues to gather information about this ongoing accident and will update the details as new medical reports or findings from the official investigation become available.
