The serious accident that occurred early Monday morning in the municipality of Venezuela, in Ciego de Ávila, not only resulted in 27 injuries: it directly impacted a group of workers from the Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS) El Fortín, who were part of the solidarity efforts to support the eastern provinces following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, according to Invasor.

According to reports on social media from the official outlet and Televisión Avileña, the bus Girón, which was transporting the cooperatives, collided with a cart around 5:40 a.m. on the stretch known as La Caoba, located within the Simón Reyes Popular Council.

The affected individuals, members of a group that has contributed to the shipment of food and agricultural products to Santiago de Cuba and Holguín, were injured while heading to their usual work activities.

According to Dr. Inés Padrón González, head of the Emergency Service at the Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial Hospital, 20 patients were treated at the center, three of whom are in critical condition —two with severe cranial trauma and one with closed abdominal trauma with free fluid in the cavity—. The rest have orthopedic injuries and minor contusions.

The disaster caused distress in Ciego de Ávila, a province that has been mobilized since late October in the campaign “Fuerza Oriente,” sending food, clothing, and essential supplies to the areas most affected by Hurricane Melissa.

The CCS El Fortín, along with companies like 'La Cuba' and 'Ceballos', has been an essential part of those recovery efforts, contributing tons of agricultural products.

Today, the same workers who used to help others are the ones in need of support and hope. The provincial authorities, led by Julio Gómez Casanova and Alfredo Menéndez, remain at the hospital supervising the medical care for the injured.

CiberCuba will continue to provide updates on the health status of the cooperative members and the progress of the accident investigation.
