The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, held a telephone conversation this Thursday with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, at a time of maximum tension between Caracas and Washington.
According to a report from the Kremlin, the Russian leader expressed his solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reaffirmed his full support for Maduro's government “amid increasing external pressure.”
The statement, cited by Russian state media, indicates that both leaders exchanged views on the future of the bilateral alliance, which has been strengthened since the entry into force of the strategic partnership treaty in November 2025.
Putin and Maduro reiterated their commitment to advancing joint projects in energy, economy, finance, culture, and humanitarian cooperation.
An explicit support amid Washington's escalation in the Caribbean
The conversation takes place while the United States is conducting an unprecedented military offensive in the Caribbean under the pretext of combating drug trafficking. This operation—which includes naval deployments, airstrikes from combat planes, and bombings against suspicious vessels—has resulted in dozens of deaths, despite a lack of evidence linking the attacked ships to drug trafficking.
In this context, Washington recently executed the carrying Venezuelan crude off the coast of the South American country, which was destined for another allied country, Cuba.
Moscow and Caracas stand united
According to RT, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil shared the official version from the Venezuelan government on Telegram, stating that the bilateral relationship with Russia is “strategic, solid, and ascending.” The text asserts that Putin “firmly and categorically reaffirmed his support for Maduro” in his efforts to maintain peace, political stability, and economic development.
Putin also emphasized that the Venezuelan people "deserve absolute respect in their struggle for the defense of sovereignty and independence," and confirmed that the communication channels between both governments remain permanently open. Additionally, he offered Russia's diplomatic capacity to strengthen cooperation in essential areas such as sovereignty, international law, and regional peace.
Rising tensions: a Caribbean transformed into a geopolitical playing field
The escalation between Washington and Caracas has raised international concerns. Since August, the U.S. has maintained a significant force off the coast of Venezuela under Operation "Southern Lance."
Additionally, the White House has bombed alleged drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific, resulting in dozens of deaths without independent verification. All of this has led to increasing isolation, due to the suspension of international flights to Venezuela by global airlines.
