The Russian government issued a warning to the Administration of Donald Trump on Thursday regarding the situation in Venezuela, emphasizing that a “deliberate escalation of tension” could lead to unpredictable consequences for the entire Western Hemisphere.

In an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, released on December 18, Moscow expressed its "special concern" regarding the unilateral nature of decisions that it claimed pose a threat to international navigation.

“We hope that the Donald Trump Administration, characterized by a rational and pragmatic approach, does not make a fatal mistake and refrains from continuing to slide into a situation that threatens with unpredictable consequences for the entire Western Hemisphere.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry urged Washington not to fall into what it termed “ideological obstinacy”, arguing that this stance hinders the understanding of what is happening around Venezuela.

In this context, Moscow referenced the liberator Simón Bolívar to emphasize the principle of sovereignty: "Every people has the right to choose their own leaders, and other nations must respect that choice," it noted.

Russia stated that it supports the normalization of dialogue between the United States and Venezuela and asserted that it is necessary to take steps toward easing tensions and seeking "constructive" solutions, respecting the principles of International Law.

Moscow also reiterated its support for the thesis that Latin America and the Caribbean must remain a zone of peace, a condition that —as it indicated— ensures the stable and independent development of the countries in the region.

In its message, the foreign ministry reaffirmed its "solidarity with the Venezuelan people" and its support for the direction of the government of Nicolás Maduro, which it noted is aimed at defending national interests and the sovereignty of the country.

This statement comes after the U.S. destroyed at least four vessels in waters near Venezuela in the last 48 hours, the most recent resulting in four fatalities.

Washington claims that the boats are linked to drug trafficking; however, Venezuela argues that they are pressure mechanisms against the country.
