A family in Palmetto Bay, in Miami-Dade County, experienced moments of terror when a speeding Corvette crashed into their home, in an accident that was captured on surveillance video and has gone viral.
The violent impact, which occurred in front of three children who had just been playing in the yard, has reignited neighbors' complaints about dangerous driving in the area and triggered a wave of outrage on social media.
Explosion on Christmas Eve
Although the images have gone viral in the past few hours, the accident occurred around 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24, at the intersection of Southwest 174th Street and 88th Court, in the southern part of Miami-Dade County.
According to local news, the driver of the Corvette, a man in his 60s who lives just across the street, ran a stop sign and ended up crashing violently into the Villar family's property.
The video from a security camera shows the roar of the engine, the screeching of the tires, and the exact moment when the vehicle crashes through the front fence, slams into a concrete wall, and destroys a boat and a trailer.
"We only heard an explosion."
Genavieve Paige Villar, mother of three young children and homeowner, recounted the terrifying moment:
"He ran the stop sign and crashed into my house," he reported to several media outlets.
"I had just brought my children into the house, and we were getting ready to shower and go to a family event when we suddenly heard an explosion," he stated
Villar assured that just moments before, his children were playing in the front yard, precisely in the spot where the impact occurred.
"They were drawing with chalk on that side of the house," she specified. After the blast, the woman said she began to scream, and when she ran outside, they saw the scene of chaos:
“The only thing we could see at that moment was the Corvette there releasing smoke. You could smell the smoke, and it was very scary,” Villar assured, visibly affected.
Property damage and lingering fear
The images after the impact show shattered concrete, splintered wood, and remnants of the collapsed wall.
No injuries were reported, both the driver and their passenger emerged unscathed, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
The driver was fined on the spot and, according to CBS News, is under investigation, though it remains unclear whether they will face additional charges.
The Villar family reported the incident to the authorities and is now in the process of assessing the cost of the repairs.
"We are trying to calculate how much it will cost to fix the damages, but beyond the material aspects, I have lost my sense of security," confessed the homeowner.
Recidivism in just six months
The dramatic crash was not the first incident to occur on that same street. Villar revealed that this was the second accident that has happened in front of their house since they moved in just six months ago.
According to what she said, in the previous accident, someone coming from her left side crashed into the front of her truck, completely destroying it. The vehicle involved on that occasion was a Ford F-250 driven by her husband.
Both incidents have heightened concerns about the speed at which some vehicles are traveling in that residential area.
The incident has raised alarms among the neighbors, who have begun to demand urgent road safety measures from the authorities.
Residents have proposed the installation of speed bumps or a roundabout, and they assert that the existing signage has not been sufficient to deter reckless driving.
Official response: They are seeking options to slow down the speed
In statements to CBS News, the Vice Mayor of Palmetto Bay, Mark Merwitzer, acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and stated that they are exploring various alternatives.
"Some solutions that have been implemented here include a small roundabout that requires residents to slow down. We also have speed bumps as an option. I want residents to know that we are actively seeking more information and that we will resolve this together," he explained.
Meanwhile, the Villar family continues their vacation, with the recent trauma still very much present and the lingering fear of what could have been an irreversible tragedy.
