A silent tragedy struck the community of San Diego, in the municipality of Texcoco, State of Mexico, this Thursday, where four individuals of Cuban origin, including a child of just 10 years old, were found dead inside their home, allegedly due to poisoning from a liquefied gas (LP) leak.
The discovery occurred after neighbors alerted the authorities due to a strong gas smell that could be detected from outside the house, located on Del Recreo Street.
Officials from Civil Protection and Firefighters from Texcoco arrived at the scene, and upon entering, confirmed that the four individuals no longer showed vital signs, as reported by El Universal.
The victims have been identified as two men aged between 30 and 35, a woman of approximately the same age, and a 10-year-old minor. Preliminary reports from authorities indicated that the possible cause of death was a gas leak caused by a malfunctioning instantaneous water heater, a hypothesis that still needs to be confirmed by official investigations.
According to testimonies collected by La Jornada Estado de México, it was a family of Cuban doctors who resided in the area and were well-known for their closeness to the community. Neighbors described them as calm and supportive individuals who ran a nearby pharmacy and provided medical consultations and assistance to the residents of the neighborhood.
"They were always willing to help," reported residents of the area, who deeply mourned the loss of the family, whose work and presence had created close ties with the local community.
The property was cordoned off by members of the Municipal and State Police, while personnel from the Attorney General's Office of the State of Mexico carried out the corresponding procedures and ordered the removal of the bodies, which were transferred to the Forensic Medical Service for the mandatory autopsy, reported Diario Portal.
The investigation continues to clarify the exact causes of the accident. So far, the authorities have not disclosed the identities of the victims, nor has it been specified whether the Cuban doctors were in Mexico under any type of government contract or if they were practicing independently.
