A large-scale forest fire broke out this Tuesday in the area of mangle del Naranjal, in the city of Matanzas, reaching levels that have been described by residents and authorities as "alarming proportions."
The flames, visible from various points in the city, raised concerns among the residents of the Armando Mestre neighborhood and nearby areas due to their proximity to residential zones.
Flames near the urban center
According to a report by Periódico Girón, "several kilometers of mangroves around the Armando Mestre neighborhood are experiencing a significant fire."
The first signs of the fire were observed near the Victoria de Girón Stadium, and from那里, the flames quickly spread towards the vicinity of the Circunvalación.
During the night, the orange light of the blaze rose into the sky, creating an unsettling spectacle that kept the residents on alert.
The firefighters promptly arrived at the scene, deploying efforts to contain the spread of the fire and prevent it from reaching nearby buildings.
"The proximity of the fire to the neighboring buildings is much closer this time."
Although, according to the authorities, the intensity of the fire has decreased in terms of size, the residents of Naranjal expressed their concern.
"The proximity of the fire to the neighboring buildings is much closer this time than in previous instances," witnesses told the local media.
The affected area is located in a region where wildfires are not an unusual phenomenon.
However, both neighbors and firefighters agree that the incident this Tuesday “has no precedent in terms of magnitude and real danger for the residents of the area.”
According to the mentioned report, the authorities were conducting surveys and reconnaissance to more accurately determine the extent of the affected area.
Despite the severity of the fire, there have been no reports of significant material damage or injuries, and the flames have started to move away from the neighborhood, according to the firefighters.
Regarding the origin of the fire, a specific cause has not yet been identified.
Nevertheless, local authorities have seized the opportunity to call for civic responsibility.
"The call for civic responsibility is directed at those responsible for incidents like this, which are so prone to getting out of control," warns the note from Girón.
As of the closing of this report, there is no additional information about the incident.
