The U.S. dollar continues to strengthen in the informal market, and this Friday, January 16, 2026, it is trading at 480 Cuban pesos (CUP), according to the reference rate from elTOQUE.

The greenback costs five pesos more today than it did the previous day. It continues its upward trend driven by the growing demand for foreign currency for imports and purchases in private businesses or state-run stores, while the value of the Cuban peso continues to plummet due to the internal economic crisis.

The euro is also rising and is sold for 520 CUP, five pesos more than on Thursday. It is the most expensive currency in the informal exchange market. The preference for the European currency remains stable among Cubans who are making trips or international transactions, despite its lower circulation in cash compared to the dollar.

On its part, the MLC (Freely Convertible Currency) remains at 400 CUP, despite the loss of confidence in the state digital currency, affected by usage limitations within the Cuban commercial system.
