Iván García Pérez was released this Thursday after more than two months detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as confirmed by journalist Javier Díaz.
García, who holds an I-220A immigration status, had been arrested on November 7, 2025 after attending a routine appointment with immigration in Miramar, Florida.
After his arrest, he was initially held in the facility known as Alcatraz of the Caimans, then transferred to other facilities, eventually ending up in the Broward Transitional Center (BTC) in Broward County.
Her lawyers were able to file a habeas corpus that was crucial for securing her release.
An immigration judge approved the measure and set a bail of only $1,500, which is considered unusually low for this type of case.
Iván García regained his freedom last Thursday around four in the afternoon and is now reunited with his wife, family, and friends, Díaz emphasized.
The young man took advantage of his outing to thank all the people who shared his story on social media, a gesture that is believed to have been crucial in bringing his case to the judge's attention.
"Her freedom prevented a deportation to Cuba," emphasized the journalist.
García Pérez will need to continue his immigration process in the United States, as he still does not have humanitarian parole, but his case represents a significant victory against a system that leaves thousands of Cubans with I-220A status in uncertainty.
The young man, who is studying to become a health professional, has not violated U.S. laws and has distinguished himself for his effort and personal growth.
Her release has been celebrated as an act of justice and hope within the Cuban community in Florida.
"Congratulations to Iván after being in detention for over two months. I hope he spends some excellent weeks with his wife, family, and school friends who supported him so much while he was imprisoned," concluded Díaz.
