The U.S. State Department highlighted the capture of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, as one of the most significant achievements of the first year of President Donald Trump's second term.
The report published on X states that “the State Department designated the Cartel of the Suns as a foreign terrorist organization, and President Trump ordered the successful capture of the accused narco-terrorists Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores, in an operation to apprehend these fugitives from U.S. justice.”
The document also highlights the progress in the global offensive against organized crime and terrorism, with the arrest of leaders from the Sinaloa Cartel, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), and the Venezuelan group Tren de Aragua.
Additionally, the report mentions that four radical Antifa groups were designated as terrorist organizations, and the Lebanese, Egyptian, and Jordanian branches of the Muslim Brotherhood were included in that list due to their material support for Hamas.
Under the leadership of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Department emphasized the internal reorganization of the institution to adapt it “to the challenges of the 21st century,” with a 45% reduction in domestic offices and greater autonomy for embassies and regional offices.
In international matters, the Department highlighted the implementation of the Peace Plan in Gaza, the signing of the agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda after three decades of conflict, and the withdrawal of the United States from dozens of international organizations "that promote ideologies contrary to the interests of the American people."
The report also highlighted the commitment made with NATO countries to raise their defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, an increase that the Department described as “a historic victory in deterrence and collective defense policy.”
"The government of President Trump will continue to deliver results and will always put the United States first," concludes the statement.
