The Cuban regime inaugurated this Sunday in the municipality of San Antonio del Sur, Guantánamo, the first 15 homes made from shipping containers, a "cheap and rushed" initiative aimed at families who lost their homes during the passage of hurricanes Oscar in 2024 and Melissa in 2025.

According to a report by the Cuban News Agency (ACN), the houses are part of the new settlement "24 de febrero" in the locality of Buena Vista.

Each housing unit, measuring 12 meters in length, is designed for families of up to four people and includes two bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, living-dining area, and complete sanitary facilities.

The structures rise above the ground as a measure of protection against flooding and use melanin panels for thermal insulation.

According to Ariel Frómeta Matos from the Municipal Housing Directorate, the total investment amounted to 14.5 million pesos.

"Forty-eight people are already enjoying this initiative, which aims to provide a quick and durable solution," he stated to ACN.

During the inauguration, Reinaldo Paz Estévez, one of the beneficiaries, expressed his gratitude for the assistance received over two years after the cyclone's passage through the east: “When Hurricane Oscar hit, we thought this was going to be impossible. We had lost everything, and today we have a new home.”

The community is being built in a planned development area up to 2030, where it is expected to construct a warehouse, an expanded school, and new basic services.

Local authorities emphasized that these projects aim to "strengthen essential services" and enhance the quality of life in one of the most vulnerable municipalities in eastern Cuba.

Although the Cuban regime markets this alternative as "wonderful", the reality is that far from being a broad or free solution, it entails indebtedness, reduced living space, and expectations adjusted to the shortage.
