The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, congratulated the elected president of Costa Rica, Laura Fernández Delgado, following her electoral victory, and expressed his desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation on issues such as drug trafficking, cybersecurity, and migration.
In an official statement issued by the State Department, Rubio described Fernández Delgado's victory as a “clear electoral win” and stated that Washington looks forward to working closely with the new Costa Rican government.
"Under his leadership, we are confident that Costa Rica will continue to advance on common priorities including the fight against drug trafficking, the end of illegal immigration to the United States, the promotion of cybersecurity, and secure telecommunications," Rubio noted.
Likewise, he published on the social media platform X: “Congratulations to the elected president @laurapresi2026 and to the people of Costa Rica. The United States looks forward to collaborating with your administration to promote prosperity and security in our hemisphere.”
Migration and security as regional priorities
The statement emphasizes that the new U.S. administration views irregular migration as one of the central pillars of its hemispheric agenda, seeking greater collaboration with allied governments in Central America.
Rubio also emphasized the importance of strengthening economic ties and promoting common prosperity on the continent.
"The United States looks forward to working... to deepen our enduring partnership and promote shared prosperity in our hemisphere," he concluded.
Costa Rica has historically been regarded as one of Washington's main democratic partners in Latin America, and the election of Fernández Delgado marks a new stage in bilateral cooperation.
