A new earthquake shakes eastern Cuba

A new noticeable earthquake shook at least two provinces in eastern Cuba early Tuesday morning, just two days after another tremor that was also felt across much of the eastern region.

According to the head of the National Seismological Service, Enrique Diego Arango Arias, the earthquake occurred in the early hours of the morning and was confirmed by the national network of seismic stations.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10.0 km and had a magnitude of 5.0, as specified by the researcher.

"Today, February 10, the network of stations of the Cuban National Seismological Service has recorded an earthquake reported as perceptible at 4:18 am local time, located at the coordinates 18.34 degrees north latitude and 75.53 degrees west longitude," detailed the specialist on Facebook.

Arango Arias specified that the seismic event occurred south of eastern Cuba, with an approximate location of 208 kilometers south of Santiago de Cuba.

According to the official source,  so far reports of perceptibility have mainly been received in Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo.

The National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) confirmed the event through its official website, where it provided the technical parameters of the event categorized as the "Last Perceptible Event."

According to the published information, the earthquake occurred on February 10, 2026, at 03:18 a.m. (local time), with an origin time recorded at 08:18:21 UTC, with an uncertainty of ± 0.6 seconds.

The technical data indicate:

Latitude: 18.340° (± 8 km).

Longitude: −75.534° (± 5 km).

Depth: 10 km (± 21 km).

Magnitude: 5.0 Mw.

Location: 186 km southwest of Caimanera, Guantánamo Province.

The report also included the focal mechanism, used by seismologists to analyze the type of fault responsible for the seismic movement.

As of the time this report was issued, there is no additional information regarding the earthquake recorded earlier this morning.

A new tremor following the strong earthquake on Sunday

This event occurs just two days after another noticeable earthquake recorded on Sunday, February 8, which was strongly felt across several eastern provinces and sparked a wave of reactions on social media.

On that occasion, Enrique Diego Arango Arias reported that the earthquake occurred at 7:00 a.m., with a magnitude of 5.6, located 24 kilometers southeast of Imías, in the province of Guantánamo.

"The network of stations of the Cuban National Seismological Service has recorded an earthquake reported as perceptible at 7:00 a.m. local time, located at coordinates 20.16 degrees north latitude and 74.44 degrees west longitude, at a depth of 7.1 km and with a magnitude of 5.6," the specialist then detailed.

According to the official report, during the first hour following the event, 21 aftershocks were recorded, none of which were perceptible; and in the second hour, another 12 aftershocks were counted, likewise with no reports of perception from the population.

CENAIS confirmed this phenomenon and located it about 30 kilometers southeast of Imías.

In an informative contact with the Midday News, the Secretary of the Party for the municipality of Imías reported this Monday that the earthquake on Sunday caused minor damage to about 14 homes.
