The General Customs of the Republic detected a new drug trafficking operation at the José Martí International Airport in Havana after discovering a significant amount of methamphetamine hidden in a passenger's luggage.
The information was confirmed by Wiliam Pérez González, the first deputy chief of Customs of Cuba, through the social network X, where he detailed that the drugs were hidden inside an electric coffee maker, baseballs, and other equipment carried in the suitcase.
According to the official, the detection was carried out in coordination with the anti-drug agency as part of actions to combat drug trafficking at the country's entry points. He reiterated that the fight against these types of crimes remains a top priority for the authorities.
The brief statement did not specify the number of people involved or the country of origin of the passenger, nor did it provide information about the measures taken.
Although the regime official attributes this new detection to a “long list of achievements” by customs, the reality is that in recent years, this type of operation has increased, which also indicates a rise in attempts to smuggle illicit substances into the island.
Cuban customs authorities reported this weekend the arrest of a passenger at the José Martí International Airport in Havana, who was attempting to illegally take 28 birds out of the country hidden in tubes attached to his body.
The fact was confirmed by William Pérez González, who reported the attempted trafficking in a post on the social network X.
"Frustrated at Havana Airport the illegal extraction from the country of 28 birds hidden in tubes attached to the body of a passenger. Administrative measures were taken and the police were notified," wrote the official.
